The Rear Brake Upgrade Your FL5/DE5/FK8 Has Been Waiting For Is Here. Meet the 27WON 350MM Rear Rotor Kit
The FL5 Civic Type R and DE5 Integra Type S come equipped with serious braking hardware right off the showroom floor. Big Brembo front calipers, large two-piece rotors, and enough stopping power for your average driver. But once you step back and look at the complete setup, something feels a little… unfinished.
The front brakes have all the presence and performance. Meanwhile, the factory rear rotors look undersized. In fact, they are not very far off the size of even the lowest trims of Civic sold and utilize a version of the same caliper. So, we knew we could improve. This is not some fancy rear big brake kit (although we have that in the works). This is not a setup that deletes factory features. And it’s definitely not something that locks owners into proprietary brake pads. And it’s available to order NOW!
FL5/DE5 Rear Rotor Upgrade (Installed)
What we wanted was a larger, better-performing rear rotor setup that enhances the look of the car while retaining the everyday functionality Honda engineered into it. So, that’s exactly what we built. Let’s dive right into the exact specs of this kit.
350mm 2-Piece Rotors
At the center of the new 27WON Rear Rotor Upgrade Kit is a pair of massive 350MM x 12MM two-piece rear brake rotors.
Increasing the rotor diameter (from factory 305mm to 350mm) and adding thickness gives the rear braking system greater thermal capacity. In simple terms, there is more rotor material available to absorb and manage the heat generated during repeated braking. This is something the rear brakes often see without you even knowing…stability control will brake the inside wheel whether you ask it to or not under spirited driving. That becomes especially important when your Type R or Type S is being pushed through a canyon road, around an autocross course, or during a full track session.
2-Piece Rotor Closeup
Why go with a two-piece rotor?
Instead of using a traditional one-piece rotor, we separated the assembly into an aluminum center hat and a dedicated iron friction ring. This means we add size without too much weight. The aluminum rotor hats receive a durable black protective finish giving the center of the rotor a clean appearance. The rest of the rotor has a zinc coating that wears away after a couple hundred miles. This helps with corrosion resistance of the non-friction surfaces in harsh environments. You can swap out the outer rings with replacements once the rotors are worn out and save some $$$ since you reuse the center hats.
We also added machined slots across the rotor faces. These slots help sweep away brake dust, debris, and gases that can accumulate between the brake pad and rotor during aggressive use.
Put everything together and you get a rear rotor designed to handle more heat, cool more efficiently, and look right at home on the back of an FL5 or DE5.
27WON Performance Rear Brake Pads
One of our biggest goals with this kit was maintaining the serviceability that makes the factory rear brake system so easy to live with.
This means the 27WON Rear Rotor Upgrade is designed around the OEM-sized rear brake pads used by the FL5 Civic Type R and DE5 Integra Type S as well as the FK8.
That means you can continue using virtually any OEM-compatible rear brake pad and select the compound that best matches your build. Daily driving the car and want something quiet with low dust? Go with factory ceramic OE pads from Honda. Building a weekend canyon car and looking for more bite? Try the 27WON Hybrid pad. Preparing for regular track days and need a more aggressive compound? Look for a semi or fully metallic race option from your choice of manufacturers.
Both the FL5 and DE5 use an electronic parking brake system integrated into the factory rear calipers. Replacing or eliminating that system would create a whole new list of problems that no street-driven car owner wants to deal with. Our solution uses a vehicle-specific caliper mounting bracket that properly repositions the factory rear caliper over the larger 350MM rotor. Because the original rear caliper and electronic parking brake actuator remain in place, the parking brake continues to operate just as it did from the factory.
FL5/DE5 Rear Rotor Upgrade (Caliper Bracket)
And of course, it had to look the part.
When you install a rotor this large, the caliper mounting bracket becomes much more visible behind the wheel. We could have left the brackets raw or finished them in a basic black, but neither option felt right next to the bright red Brembo calipers mounted at the front of these cars.Instead, each bracket comes finished in our Redline Red using a high-temperature-resistant paint.
The red brackets visually tie the rear braking system into the factory front Brembo setup, giving the car a much more complete and intentional appearance.
Let’s talk about fitment a bit. We know you guys and girls love to run aftermarket rims. Our upgrade will fit many popular 18 inch wheels like TE 37s (18x10) and Titan 7 T-S5 (18x9.5) along with all factory 19 inch and 20 inch wheels. If wheel fitment is a concern, a small hub centric spacer can always be used.
