11th Gen Honda Civic Turbocharger Design Blog Pt 5. - Own the Boost, Own the Streets - GIN Turbo Available Now

The time is here!!! The time to make some serious power and own the streets. The time to take your 2022+ Honda Civic and 2023 + Acura Integra to the absolute next level.

Today, the team here at 27WON Honda Performance is excited to officially launch our performance turbocharger upgrade for the 11th gen Civic and 5th gen Acura Integra. Formally known as “Gin” which means Silver in Japanese.

We brought you along on this journey via our blogs starting back in October of 2022, but we’ve been developing this system for much longer. We put all hands-on deck to make this next generation of turbocharger our best one yet. It reflects all our years in turbocharger development for the 10th gen and more. We learned what worked and what didn’t work. If you want to catch all the juicy details, then click below and read through our development blog series for this Gin turbocharger.

Part 3 – Wheel Selection

Part 4 – Feel the Power

We’ll briefly recap the blog highlights below.

First things first. We needed to understand the OEM turbocharger. We wanted to see how different this unit was from the previous 10th gen versions. Turns out, the OEM 11th gen turbo out of the 1.5L Civic/Integra is the same turbocharger that powers the 1.5T 10th gen Honda Accord. So, while this turbo was new for the Civic, it had been pounding the streets in the Accord for a few years already. It has a twin scroll design turbine housing with a compressor cover that housed the BPV unlike the 10th gen 1.5T where the BPV was in the turbo inlet pipe. This means the new generation of Civics and Integras have a simpler turbo design that is close to what’s found in the FK8.

Once we knew what we had, the team had to decide on what materials we would use to build Gin. We first upgraded the turbine housing from D5S material to 310 Stainless Steel. This creates a unit that will be less prone to cracking and rust. Next were the wheels. The compressor wheels got upgrades in not only the material(billet aluminum) that they were made of, but how they are made (point-milled) too. This again makes for improvements in strength and durability; two things that are super important in today’s modern turbo engines.

Next up was determining wheel sizes. We wanted wheels that improved both horsepower and torque potential, but we didn’t want to sacrifice what made this car so fun to drive; responsiveness and a strong torque curve. If we go BIG, then we get a big bump in horsepower and torque at the expense of a lazy turbo. After testing a bunch of wheel combos, we opted for a 9-blade compressor wheel and 11-blade turbine wheel for the Ball Bearing version which gives solid top end power with a spool to match.

We backed our Ball Bearing wheel configuration with tons of dyno testing. Over 320 torque and 330 WHP are the staggering numbers we saw when we paired our Ball Bearing Gin with the full suite of 27WON bolt on parts and tuned her to perfection on some corn. This car is quick, powerful, still fun to drive, and is 100% drop in. We are certain this will be the turbo to have and will outperform any other like it.

We then beat this thing up on the streets, the race track, and even down to the local grocery store for some milk.

With the miles stacked on and the dyno driven data to back it up, we got to a turbo that is worthy of the 27WON brand name; One that we are confident you are going to love and one that will be the staple in the community.

A Journal Bearing Gin is coming in a few months. We’ve spent some extra time on the Journal Bearing version to make sure it’s not too lazy. As a result, it’ll have similar spool characteristics as Gin BB at around $300 less.

We want to thank everyone who has followed along on this journey as we brought this awesome piece of kit to market. GRAB YOUR BALL BEARING GIN TURBO TODAY!

Enjoy and be FAST!!!!
