27WON Launches the FK8 Drop-in Turbocharger Upgrade

The time is here!!! Our drop-in performance turbocharger for the 10th + 11th generation Honda Civic Type R is now available.

KURO, as we dubbed it, is a 100% bolt-on unit that can increase horsepower and torque for those utilizing a stock fuel system and deliver even more power for those with upgraded pumps, injectors, etc.!

Follow along with us below as we celebrate this milestone in the late model Honda performance game and share the details on what kind of gains you can expect to see. 

The goal for KURO was not to be the most “powerful” unit on the market. That would be too easy. We had a unique target we wanted to hit instead; Learn more about that in Design Blog part 1.

This turbo is the right way to extra power for those who don’t want to deal with the complexity and cost of upgrading the factory fuel system. It wasn’t just peak power we were chasing here.

We wanted to give you a turbo with a nice usable power curve. Improve that throwback in your seat feeling that you actually notice on the street, not just the fat number on the graph. 

But what if, later on, you decide to upgrade the OEM fuel system to an aftermarket in-tank pump and GDI pump? Or perhaps you pulled the trigger on the full Hondata Fuel System upgrade if you have an FK8? Does that mean you need another turbocharger? NOPE. KURO was made to grow with you. If you have the fuel to feed the beast, then you can push KURO towards 500+ hp and breathe new life into your Type R. Let’s dig into some dyno plots from our in-house Dynapack and give you just one example of what you can expect to see. 

*Disclaimer* All the graphs below were created on our in-house Dynapack Daq 4 Hub Dyno with an FK8 test vehicle. We utilize a hub dyno because it takes out variance due to wheel slip and tie-down setups. By mounting the dyno directly to the hubs, we can get the most accurate and repeatable plots possible. Fun fact, this is the same brand and type of dyno that Honda North America uses when publishing OEM power figures.

100% Stock Type R, 91 Oct

To build a frame of reference, we started with a 100% stock type R for some baselines. No mods, tunes. etc. Just 91 octane fuel. A pair of back-to-back runs netted us an average of ~340 ft-lb of TQ and ~293 HP. Not too shabby!

Check out graph #2 above. The yellow numbers below graph and the dashed line is a Full Bolt-On (FBO) Type R running a catted downpipe and street MAF with stock turbo. You can see peak torque climbs to 386 ft-lb and peak horsepower jumps to 316 on 91 Octane gas. Compared this to graph #1 and you see gains of around ~50 ft-lb of torque and ~25 horsepower with some simple bolt-on mods and a custom tune. 

Now, let’s bolt up the Kuro and see what happens. Pay close attention to the dotted line and green numbers below the graph. The only physical part we changed was swapping out the OEM stock turbo for the 27WON Kuro. Looking at the graphs, peak HP jumped by 30!

Now, the peak numbers only tell part of the story. Let’s look at graph (#3) above and pay attention to the greater area under the curve. For our torque graph (the one on the left), you can see we made more torque everywhere from 3500rpm all the way to 7000rpm. Now, that’s impressive. For our horsepower graph (the one on the right), we made more hp everywhere in the same area from 3500rpm to 7000rpm.

That’s a huge win and will make a night and day difference in every single driving scenario! Look at that area between 6-7000rpm on the HP graph. There is a nearly 60 horsepower delta by the top of the rev range at 7000 rpm.

That is power you can feel. And it only gets better. See how on both graphs the plotted lines are almost identical in the 2000-3500 rpm window?  That means the car is basically driving and building torque just like OEM. That will surely put a smile on your face and not something you will likely find in any other aftermarket turbo for the FK8 platform

So Vincent, are you saying that this 27WON Kuro upgraded drop-in turbocharger drives and spools just like OEM and can make over 60+ HP on 91 oct fuel all for under $2000????

YES, I am, and it gets better too.

Let's now take the same car and add a little of the miracle juice known as ethanol with graph #4. This sweet concoction is a fantastic way to make power out of just about any car. Even our sort of picky GDI (gasoline direct injection) Honda’s love corn. Because the next data you’ll see is from a car with a 100% stock fuel system, we could only run up to around E35. The only change here is the fuel from graph #2 & #3.

What we saw was incredible. Another 50ft-lb of TQ and nearly 80 HP. Truly some serious gains. That is real power you can hear and feel and a great way to enjoy our new turbo upgrade.

For the final and last graph (#5), you see a CTR with the OEM fuel system upgraded to the plug-and-play Hondata fuel system and re-tuned. With the extra fuel this system provides, we made more power across the entire band from 2000rpm all the way to redline. Peak numbers of 450 tq and 462 hp were achieved. There is more to get from this turbo, but we were ultimately limited by the stock-sized street MAF and catted downpipe setup. Upgrading to a larger RACE MAF and catless down-pipe for off-road use should take KURO into 500+ HP territory.
